HARDBALL ESSAY

DIRECTIONS: Read HARDBALL by Christopher Matthews.

Your essay should be a minimum of of 700 words in length. Typed papers are preferred, but a neatly written essay (in ink) on lined paper (one side) is acceptable. Be sure to address all parts of the question and use specific examples from the book.

Answer either of the following questions. Take brief notes as you read and attach your notes to the essay.

1. "To get ahead in life, you an learn a great deal from those who get ahead for a living....People are jockeying for position, all the while keeping an eye on the competition....There's a magnetism to this world of make or break." (Christopher Matthews)

Explain how, according to Matthews, the game of politics is played ( i.e., who gets ahead and why). Include a variety of "players" in your discussion ... presidents, members of Congress, aides, media, etc. Explain the "magnetism" of the political world.

2. Assume you are a special advisor to a candidate. You have been asked to prepare recommendations for your candidate to gain and solidify support among the voters, the media, influential special interest groups and international players. Using current events and issues, suggest how your candidate might use Christopher Matthews' political "tips" to best deal with the different "players" mentioned above.

( You may write in the first person in question #2, but not in question #1 )
